Robbie Hart (Sandler) é um cantor sem sucesso que só consegue contrato para participar de casamentos. Num deles, conhece Julia (Drew Barrymore, de Nunca Fui Beijada), uma graça de garota. Ela acaba de mudar-se para a cidade, onde arrumou emprego de garçonete. Supostamente apaixonados por pessoas erradas, tornam-se amigos. Confidência vai, conversa vem... A história se passa em 1985 e faz referências aos ídolos pop da época, como Billy Idol, que faz uma ponta em seu próprio papel.
